Florida - Orlando - Walt Disney World - Animal Kingdom - Activities and Rides List

Howdy! Since I have visited WDW repeatedly over the last 11 years with kids that ranged in age from infant up to 14 year old, I get asked all the time "what are the best things for a child to do?" Of course, I can't give you a simple answer because a lot depends on the child in question. One of my children loves fast rides while another hates roller coasters and/or dark rides. Just because a child is TALL enough to ride something doesn't mean they will LIKE it. A bad ride experience can also set up a domino effort for all future rides. Review - Texas - Waxahachie - Scarborough Renassaince Fair - April 2019

Easter Sunday I had the privilege to journey all the way to Waxahachie to attend their annual spring Scarborough Renaissance Festival. The weather was perfect (sunny by with a good breeze). It is located in a giant field (165 total acres) so keep in mind the possibility of mud if you plan to go after or during rain.

As you approach the fair from the road, you will pass the castle-style signs as you wind your way into the grassy parking lot. Pay attention to the numbered signs so you can find your way back. Strollers and wagons are difficult to steer through the dirt/gravel so keep that in mind if you have smaller wheels or heavy loads. Outside food and drinks (except baby food) are not allowed.

The gist of the fair is to become immersed in the 16th century. People come dressed in costume or you can rent some costumes at the front. The more serious adventurers talk and act like they lived back then. Food, activities, shows are geared toward the medieval way of life. They do have modern restrooms and lots of water fountains (well-decorated) throughout.

The fair is open weekends (rain or shine) beginning the first week of April through the end of May. Each weekend has a different theme - such as Legends of the Sea (Pirates/Mermaids), Fantasy, Scottish/Celtic, etc. Throughout the day are different performances including 2 knightly jousts (the one at the end of the day tends to be more bloody). You can purchase a guide which lists the times and locations for the different talents/performances. Children can be knighted by royalty.

There are a lot of activities including archery, a maze, camel and elephant rides, a few carnival-style games and rides (one of which is a spinning barrel), a petting zoo, face painting, hair braiding, a masseuse, etc.

Almost all of the food that is sold at Scarborough can be eaten with the hands (as they would have done in the 16th century). Some of my favorite items include the Steak-on-a-Stick, Sausage-on-a-Stick, Fried Mac n Cheese, and Turkey Legs (not pictured). Some vendors do offer gluten-free options. There's also a few places that sell fresh fruit (fruit kabobs and packaged fruits). Another favorite are the wandering vendors - like this pretzel man. The only full-service restaurant/bar is the Rose & Crown Restaurant which gets pretty crowded.

Tip - Bring lots of cash (almost all the food/drink vendors are cash-based) and dollar bills to tip the performers; there is an ATM available.

Overall, this a great family-oriented festival and it's fun to dress in costume for the day. It is A LOT of walking so wear appropriate shoes!

Review - Florida - Orlando - WDW - Magic Kingdom - Plaza Ice Cream Parlor

This is one of my Must-Do's on every Disney trip - visit the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor.

After you pass under the Railroad entrance tunnel of Magic Kingdom, you will soon find yourself on Main Street USA (the very, very busy area that leads to Cinderella's Castle in the background). Along the street on both sides are shops and eateries. At the end of the street on the right is the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor. You will spot the long line before you can find the entrance. The line tends to wrap around along the side of the building in a roped-off queue. There's almost always a line - even on cold nights and rainy days.

My only complaint is the lack of seating. They have metal tables/chairs just outside but they are almost always taken and don't accommodate larger families. We usually end up eating further down the street.

The parlor has a menu that is pretty consistent (see photo). They also feature seasonal sundaes (like the Minnie Sundae) and Kitchen Sink Sundaes (a little plastic sink full of ice cream and toppings that you can clean out when you're done and take home). I find the mini sinks to be a great deal considering 2-3 people can eat from it and you get a souvenir to take home. Right now they have both Minnie and Mickey sink options. Not sure how long they will have the Minnie option.

You can customize your order - always ask.

They also have FREE cups of ice water.

Keep in mind on hot days the cones melt super-fast. So you might want to get your younger kids ice cream in a cup to avoid major messes.

The restrooms are located past the outdoor seating area next to Tomorrowland Terrace.

Review - Florida - Orlando - WDW - Epcot - Akershus Royal Banquet

One of my favorite character meals is Akershus Royal Banquet in Epcot nestled in the country for Norway.

Reservations are highly recommended and are booked months in advance. Try calling the Disney Dining reservation hotline ((407) WDW-DINE or (407) 939-3463). They do enforce the no-show policy so if you need to cancel last minute, call the hotline.

Akershus offers 3 meal options - Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Lunch and Dinner are basically the same and cost the same. Children 10 and up are priced as adults.

Your meal starts off by visiting Belle in her pale yellow dress in a vestibule upfront. A photopass photographer takes your picture(s) (or you can have them use your camera). Belle also autographs.

Your waiter/waitress will escort you to your seat and take your drink order. All meals feature a "cold" buffet with some Scandinavian options as well as cold cuts, salads and fruits. "Hot" menu items are delivered to your table. Breakfast hot items include bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs which can be refilled as desired. Lunch and Dinner may feature salmon, chicken or a meatball dish followed up with a dessert sampler. Children's options are also available for Lunch and Dinner.

Now for the best part and why you're paying exorbitant amounts of money to eat here - throughout your meal four different princesses will visit your table for photographs and/or autographs -- Ariel (in a gown), Cinderella, Aurora and Snow White. Every half hour or so, the princesses will start up a procession and your children (and/or adults) can follow one of them around the restaurant to some lively music. Your child can request to hold hands with the princess (they especially seem inclined when the child is wearing matching clothes/costumes).

Review - Florida - Orlando - Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum

On a recent trip to Orlando, my family finally stopped by Madame Tussauds Wax Museum off International Drive in ICON Park in the heart of Orlando.

There's a free parking garage beside the park which, in my opinion, was super-busy and chaotic on a Saturday afternoon. Cars zip through around tight corners. Spaces felt smallish. Keep an eye on young children because there is no formal walkway.

Entry prices vary depending whether you want to add-on other experiences (like the Aquarium). Prices start at $25 per adult or $20.50 per child. If you have a LEGOLAND Annual Pass (like I do), you can get in free! There are probably other discounts to be found on the Internet. I'd definitely check before I buy tickets at the door.

When you enter the museum, you will be directed to a green screen for a photo which you can purchase at the end of your visit.

So what is Madame Tussauds? It's basically a large museum that you wander room to room viewing handmade lifelike wax statues of actual famous people. The rooms are divided up by category - political (they had Obama, Trump, Lincoln, etc), Inventors (Einstein, Edison, etc), Athletes (Shaquille O'Neal, Peyton Manning, etc), Musicians/Singers (Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, etc), Television (Oprah Winfrey), Movies, and so on. Each statue/scene was accompanied by a plaque describing who the person was and why they were being featured.

The museum is also interactive. Some of the scenes had dress-up costumes or accessories (like a guitar or a cape) that you can try-on. There were also hands-on activities (being on TV with Oprah was a highlight). The DC Comics section offered a type of game that you can play if you want.

Toward the end of the tour, they have an exhibit and movie showing how the statues are made and the history behind Madame Tussaud. Fascinating for adults. Boring for kids.

Overall, it was a great place to visit and take lots of selfies.

Howdy! Aloha! Welcome!

Howdy,

After years of posting trip reviews and advice on a variety of other platforms and reviewing restaurants and locations on apps, I decided to centralize all my travel and commentary to one place - this brand new blog! My goal is to post regular reviews and features on travel that I've enjoyed with a slant toward family-friendly or historially significant experiences (as I'm a huge history buff). This blog will also feature Texas events (or those that are within driving distance if I deem them worthy enough), weekend getaways, Disney-related travel and planning, family getaways and more!

I'm a huge Disney fan and am a card-carrying Annual Passholder (AP) and Vacation Owner (DVC) who visits the parks several times a year. So be sure to stop by for my latest trip reviews and advice. You can also find some of my photos on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/wendyquest/) or Pinterest (http://www.pinterest.com/wendyquestwrite/).

I also post avidly to TripAdvisor (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Profile/wendyquest) because I love that site!

Thanks for stopping by today and I hope you enjoy what I post. :-)
