Book Review - The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line 2025

The Unofficial Guide is a wonderful resource for Disney planning (check out their website for lots of good info and tips). This updated book is a valuable resource full of deck plans, reviews of each of the current Disney ships (and a blurb about the future ships as well). There are detailed information on Disney's unique rotational dining with different restaurants and adults-only options as well. Lots of good information on Disney's new port at Fort Lauderdale. Helpful guides on preparing for your trip, packing, what to bring/not bring, embarkation and debarkation. Reviews of popular cruise itinerary destinations.

Book Review - The Unofficial Dollywood Cookbook by Erin K Browne

This isn't a travel guide or a travel book, but a cookbook full of recipes for Dollywood-style foods, snacks, and drinks. There are over 100 easy to follow recipes. Plus there are fun anecdotes, a bit of history, and information of the Dollywood amusement park and the other entertainment venues (Splash Country, Dream More Resort and Spa, and the Stampede show). You will find a section for Cooking and Baking tips in addition to Helpful Tools. In the Appendix, you will find Dollywood maps and Standard US/Metric Measurement Conversions.

Here are some interesting facts: As of 2023 (when this book was published), Dollywood produces 212,250 loaves of cinnamon bread in an average season! And 614,000 pounds of popcorn! For those who love powdery crispy funnel cakes, they make 87,000!

Chapters include "Smoky Mountain Snacks", "Lunch in the Foothills", "Dinner with Dolly", "Southern Sides", "Lovin' from the Oven", "Country Candy and Ice Cream", and "Back Porch Sips"

Book Review - Lonely Planet Hong Kong Travel Guide

I've been planning out a trip to see the other Disneyland parks of the world. Of course, considering how expensive airfare to Asia can be, might be a several years down the road plan, but I've been checking books out for Shanghai and Hong Kong from the library. Lonely Planet is one of my favorite travel guide series and this book on Hong Kong was fantastic.

This book just came out in December so the information is pretty recent (keep in mind the publishing process takes time so always verify information before visiting especially with hours and prices).

There are several things I love about this guide. One, you will find little side bubbles filled with useful tips from experts or influencers who are very familiar with the area or topic. Second, I love the little food/coffee/bar tips that are shown along the bottom for every area. There are full colors maps plus walking trail guides.

Not to mention there are two pages dedicated to Hong Kong Disneyland.

On page 203 you will find the "Toolkit" with useful info on visiting. And on page 217 there's a "Storybook" which talks about the culture and history of Hong Kong.

This book is definitely a keeper, IMO.

Book Review - Insight Guides - Shanghai City Guide

Our family love Disney World and Disneyland and we have the desire to visit the other parks in China, so I picked up this Shanghai City Guide at the library. It's a bit old (I think there's a newer version out there on Amazon) but the general information is still valid. PLUS, this book comes with a FREE ebook that you can take with you!

I do want to warn you that there's only a paragraph's worth of information for Shanghai Disney Resort and the authors recommend other parks instead. So if you're planning a trip solely for Disney, you may be disappointed with this guide.

That being said, I do like how this book is laid out by area or neighborhood. They have some useful full-color maps. The app that is advertised inside the cover of the book is no longer available but the eBook is and I was able to download it without any issues.

The really useful information is found starting on page 255 in the back of the book - getting around, money, etc.

Book Review - The Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 2025

Our family visits Walt Disney World several times a year, but it's been while since we've gone to the other coast to Disneyland. So I went ahead and bought this book to see what has changed (a lot!) so we can plan a visit.

The goal of this book is to save families money and time at one of the most popular (and crowded) amusement parks in America. This book has over 400 pages of very useful information. Every restaurant, ride, activity, hotels, and more are discussed in detail throughout as well as when to go, how to maximize your number of days, where and how to get discounts, etc.

Another thing I love about these guides are the ratings provided for each ride and activity with regard to preschool child, grade school child, teens, young adults, over 30 adults, and seniors and then whether the ride is seasonal and/or has Lightning Lane options.

There's a small section on Universal Studios Hollywood in case you plan to add that to your trip.

The back of the book features pull-out maps to take with you (for those who don't enjoy relying on the park apps).

Notice - there is currently a 25% off coupon on this book for a limited time!

Review - Texas - Dallas - Dallas Zoo

Dinosaurs have invaded the Dallas Zoo! For those who love dinosaurs will enjoy their new Dino Safari ride (more details below). There's also the brand-new Rainforest Walk.

Pre-reserving tickets is still required at the Dallas Zoo. You can do that on their website. The Dallas Zoo has implemented variable pricing depending on how busy they plan to be. Simply click "Buy Tickets" button then add the number of guests. You will then pick a date and a time to visit. While you are adding your tickets to your cart, go ahead and add parking as well ($10 per vehicle). Current ticket prices: Adults $8-$21, Youth/Seniors $8-$16, children under 2 are FREE. Also, masks are not currently required.

The first attraction you will see when you enter the zoo is the Endangered Species Carousel on the left side. They have both ride-on creatures as well as sit-in features. Fun for any age. Tickets are $4.00 each which can be purchased at the booth right in the middle of the walkway.

The brand-new Dino Safari is a shuttle through the world of dinosaurs (life-sized animatronics). Children under 36" need to be accompanied by an adult. Tickets cost $6.00. There's a nice little merchandise cart at the exit of the ride with a limited number of items to purchase. The ride will be available until Labor Day in September.

Another fun ride for children is the Mini-Train. Adults can ride but it's pretty cramped IMO. The website calls it the "T-Rex Express" but the dinosaurs have been replaced with animal statues. Tickets are $3.00 each. The train goes around a large loop at a pretty slow pace so good for any age.

One of my family's favorite things to do is to feed the animals. Currently, only the giraffe feeding station is open. For $6.00 (or $10.00 for double) you will receive lettuce leaves and (at least on our visit) some carrot sticks. They discourage guests from touching or petting the giraffes. It's best to feed the giraffes early in the day before they wander off.

We had a rare treat of seeing the cheetahs pacing around their enclosure. Normally we would be searching the very back areas for a glimpse of a sleeping cat.

The lion cubs that we saw last year looked almost fully grown! And, of course, they were sleeping. The best view of these cats is inside the Serengeti restaurant. It can get kinda crowded but it's worth the wait as they usually lay right in front of the glass windows.

The hippo trio headed out of the water to munch on grass and hay. The viewing area at the end of the downward stairs isn't always the best way to see these beauties especially when the algae has grown thick.

Overall Family Review:
  • 17 year old - Enjoyed the giraffe feeding; a bit too big for the mini train
  • 12 year old - Enjoyed Dino Safari, mini train, and the giraffe feeding
  • 7 year old - Enjoyed Dino Safari and mini train; was a bit scared to feed the giraffe
  • 1 yeaar old - Enjoyed the mini train and the giraffe feeding

Zoo Address: 650 South R.L. Thornton Freeway (I-35E), Dallas, TX 75203

Review - Florida - Orlando - SeaWorld - Christmas Celebration

This past week my family and I were able to visit SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida. Since it was chilly (65 degrees) and rainy, the park had surprisingly low attendance for a holiday week which worked great for us. Despite the rain, the Christmas Celebration was in full swing and most of the food/drink booths were operating.

What is Christmas Celebration?
For a limited time, the park contains holiday-themed decor, opportunities to meet Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and his friends, photos with Santa (before Christmas), an ice-skating show, public ice skating, and over 40 tasty treats at different drink/food booths.

Rudolph and Friends:
Tucked away in the back of the park you'll find an enclosed area called Rudolph's Christmas Town featuring photo-ops with life-sized story book vignettes as well as picture-taking opportunities with Rudolph and his friends. You may purchase photos that are taken by the professional camera crew or take your own. This area opens at 5:00pm EST and is capacity-limited. At the end of the trail is a small market with ornaments, stockings, shirts, etc for sale.

Holiday Treats:
As you know, I really enjoy food festivals and treat trails, so I went ahead and purchased a sampler lanyard at booth #1. 5-sample lanyard costs $35. 10-sample lanyard costs $50. Passholder 12-sample lanyard costs $50. The way it works is every time you order a food/drink marked with a star from one of the booths, they stamp/punch your lanyard. The lanyard is a pretty good deal considering most items were in the $10 price range. Items not marked with a star require additional payment.

There were supposed to be 20 booths, however one of them was closed (Baking Spirits High, #18). Three of the booths (#2, #10, #12) are bars without food options (#10 and #12 do offer one non-alcoholic option). Many of the food booths also serve alcohol drinks (any with a star are part of the lanyard program). Two of the booths serve cocoa (#8 and #14) which are provided in refillable plastic cups (refills start at $0.99).

Here are a few items we sampled and our reviews:

Christmas Comforts (Booth #6)
Lobster Mac & Cheese Bowl - since the cheese wasn't melted, it wasn't as good as it could have been.
Traditional Turkey Christmas Dinner Stack - Roasted Turkey, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, and Cranberry Sauce - This was actually our favorite dish. Well-cooked and very tasty.

Tottin' Around the Christmas Tree (Booth #11)
Totchos - Chicken on top of tator tots with shredded cheese, jalapenos and salsa - Worse than it looks. The staff here were so nice. They will customize your toppings (or leave them off) which is great for picky eaters.
Totchos - Carnitas (braised pork) on top of tator tots with shredded cheese, japanenos and salsa - Just gross. The cheese didn't melt.

Sliders that Sleigh (Booth #9)

Pork Belly Slider - Roasted then Seared Pork Belly, Sauerkraut, Mustard Aioli - definitely not for picky eaters as the flavors are weird
Hot Chicken Slider - Crispy Chicken, Apricot, Serrano Glaze, Pickles - Another miss. The sweet sauce was a little too heated; would have been better without the sauce/topppings.

O'Christmas Sea... Food Delights (Booth #7)
Seared Scallops - Served with Pumpkin Seed and Serrano Pesto, Mushroom Risotto - It was alright. Kids didn't like it.
Dynamite Shrimp - Served with Sambal Aioli & Cucumber Slaw - too spicy for most of our family members; next time I would leave off the aioli.

Treat Yo’ elf (Booth #20)
  - Chocolate Dipped Items - Bacon - Not as advertised at all (they used WHITE chocolate on bacon); grosser than it sounds/looks; very disappointing

North Pole Bakery (Booth #15)
  - Loaded Mini Donut Bites - Bananas Foster - Basically, a pile of mini sugar donuts with a squirt of flavored sauce. Just plain gross. The donuts were hard. Not like the advertised picture at all. We also tried the pumpkin pie flavor. Even worse. Stick with the plain sugar mini donuts.

Claus Cookie Co. (Booth #17)
S'mores - Graham Cracker, Melted Fluff, Melted Chocolate - This didn't turn out well for us; it was a big melted sticky mess.
Cookie Decorating Kit - Sugar Cookie Decorating Kit Includes Icing, Sprinkles, and Christmas Candy - this one cookie came in a nice box which we took to-go and decorated the next day. It's just one cookie so not sure it justifies the price if you pay out of pocket.

Sea of Trees:

The Christmas Light and Music show on the lake (called Sea of Trees) was really nice. The trees turned different colors according to the songs.

Other Photo Ops:

Details:
Christmas Celebration at SeaWorld Orlando ends January 2nd, 2022.
For specifics and hours, click on the Seaworld Orlando Christmas Celebration website

Overall Family Ratings:
  • 16 year old - Liked the Turkey Dinner; enjoyed riding Mako several times (since the line was so short)
  • 12 year old - Liked the plain cocoa; enjoyed Mako ride
  • 7 year old - Couldn't ride any of the big-kid rides due to his height and didn't really like the "baby" rides; liked the White Chocolate flavored cocoa
  • 15 month old - Really liked Sesame Street land

Review - Florida - Orlando - SeaWorld

During our Spring Break trip, we headed to SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida on a Sunday afternoon. It was quite crowded (so if you prefer to avoid crowds, don't plan to visit on a weekend) and there were long lines for all the rides and shows. Our main goal, however, for this visit was the annual Seven Seas Food Festival which runs Friday-Saturday-Sunday through May 9th. You will find over 50 food options and 150 adult beverage options in addition to live entertainment.

Like the Food and Wine Festival at Busch Gardens, SeaWorld's Seven Seas Food Festival allows guests to either purchase food/beverage items a la carte or you can purchase a sampler lanyard which you get punched when you order food/drink items at the participating booths. Lanyards are available in 10 sample option ($60.00 or $6.00 each item) or 15 sample option ($75.00 or $5.00 each item). Passholders get 3 extra items with the 15 sampler option.
You can check out menus and information by clicking this link

North Atlantic Market - New England Style Lobster Roll

All-American Market - Lobster, White Cheddar KRAFT® Mac N Cheese

Asian Market - Giant Tempura Prawns and Bingsu Salted Vanilla Ice Cream

SeaWorld Orlando has a wonderful children's area called Sesame Street Land which features tons of hands-on fun for young children. They can touch and press all kinds of gizmos (keep that antibacterial gel handy). Inside the Photo studio building, they can meet two Sesame Street characters in a socially-distanced way (and there are fun activities kids can play while they wait). Outside the photo studio is Big Bird's nest where you can meet the character on a scheduled basis. The playgrounds were closed but most of the rides were operating and lines were reasonable (unlike the adult rides in the rest of the park). The splash zone was open if you remember to bring your swimwear.

Overall Family Ratings:
  • 16 year old - Enjoyed the food festival; favorite item was Lobster Mac and Cheese
  • 11 year old - Sort of enjoyed the food festival; favorite items were Lobster Mac and Cheese and the Caramel Popcorn at the Asian Market
  • 6 year old - Did not enjoy the food festival (but did eat the Cheesy Bread); loved the Sesame Street land
