Travel Texas - Fox4's North Texas Bucket List Bingo

Fox4 (One of Dallas Fortworth's local news network) has created a really fun way to explore popular locations and experiences in North Texas with their printable (or downloadable) North Texas Bucket List Bingo card.

In the mornings, when I watch the newscast, the hosts talk about which activities they haven't done yet. For people who actually live in Texas, it might be a lot. We all know about cowboy boots, but contrary to popular belief, we don't all own one much less have tried them on. And, for some odd reason, a lot of people think we own and ride horses.

Go ahead and download this list and see how many experiences you've tried or would like to one day.

Review - Travel - Maryland - Bowie - Six Flags America

Nestled in the small town of Bowie, Maryland (population currently under 60k) is Six Flags America, a park with a fifty-one year history. My family was fortunate enough to be able to visit this park twice - one in 2021 after reopening due to Covid, and yesterday.

Opened July 15, 1974 as a drive-through animal safari called The Wildlife Preserve (funded by Texas tycoon Ross Perot), which shuttered for a few years in the late ninteen seventies. In 1980 it re-opened as Wild World with this drive-through safari as well as a few amusement rides plus some water slides and play areas. In 1983 it expanded to include additional amusement rides and a large wave pool (which saw a very sad tragedy that summer). Soon thereafter the safari portion was removed and the park focused mainly on water features.

In 1985 the owners added back amusement park rides to make the park profitable in cooler months. The opportunity arose to purchase Paragon Park's wooden rollercoaster, Giant Coaster, which had been operating since 1917 and renamed it "The Wild One" which is still functioning at Six Flags America (although I personally thought it looked its age).

In the early 1990's with maintenance costs becoming too high, the park was sold to Tierco Group Inc who renamed the park "Adventure World" in 1994. Many improvements were made to the park including adding new rides including Intamin's free-fall drop-tower ride now called Voodoo Drop. Tierco Group Inc (renamed Premier Parks) acquired the Six Flags amusement park chain in 1998 and renamed "Adventure World" to "Six Flags America" in 1999. They also added Looney Tunes and DC characters to assist with a push in marketing and theming. In 2000, Superman: Ride of Steel opened (and its the most popular ride in the park). In 2001, the water park area was renamed "Six Flags Hurricane Harbor" and renovated.

In 2014, the park re-themed an area with Mardi Gras in addition to a new coaster, Ragin' Cajun.

In 2016, a twenty-four story ride named Wonder Woman: Lasso of Truth was added and its the tallest ride in the park.

For the 2019 season, the previous Apocalypse ride was rebranded Firebird and converted into a floorless coaster.

Sadly, when Six Flags and Cedar Fair corporations merged just last year, everyone knew the new entity would probably start closing some of its forty-plus parks. Although Six Flags America had just invested a large amount into a new water coaster and re-theming an area into SteamTown (a fun steam punk theme), the corporation announced in May of this year, just before the start of summer season, that they would be closing Six Flags America. Hurricane Harbor (which is inside the park) closed September 6th while Six Flags America will close November 2nd.

Our visit coincided with kid-friendly albeit scaled-down Boo Fest which consisted of a trick-or-treat trail, some stage and street entertainment shows, a very short parade with costumed entertainers handing out beaded necklaces. They were not running Fright Fest and the park closed at 6pm. My youngest child thought the trick-or-treat trail inside the dark, black-lit repurposed haunted house was too scary. The halloween stage show had creepy-looking costumes and the pumpkin decorating cost $5.00. There were Boo Fest special food items for sale at the nearby counter services.

November 1st and 2nds are the last days the park will be open, 11am CST to 7:00pm CST on Saturday and until 6:00pm CST on Sunday. Pretty sure the last day will be the busiest. The stores are already clearancing out all their merchandise so there might not be anything left at that point.

Review - Dallas - Dallas Zoo Lights

Dallas Zoo Lights is a family-friendly event on select nights at the Dallas Zoo featuring millions of holiday lights strung throughout the zoo grounds, cute holiday-themed photo-ops with and without lights, a meet-and-greet with Santa, and treats on sale for purchase.

The Dallas Zoo closes at 4pm and the Dallas Zoo Lights starts at 5:30pm on select nights. I highly recommend arriving early to get into the main parking lot (versus going down and around the zoo to the back overflow parking lot). As an added bonus, the main parking areas also contain lanterns (the lit up animals as shown).

Although there are no animals present during Dallas Zoo Lights, the carousel and the mini-train are still running. Tickets are available for purchase at each ride's booth. Bring your patience to the train as the conductor was also running the ticket booth so the line got backed up.

You'll also find some special "characters" wandering throughout the zoo in costumes for photo-ops.

A big draw for this event is the Santa Claus meet-and-greet. I highly suggest your family head to Santa's workshop first because the line kept growing and growing throughout the night. The elf helpers will take your family picture on your own device. Please note you must climb stairs up and down the platform.

Some of the animal lanterns.

Some of the holiday light decorations.

One special treat - the Dinosaur exhibit is open during the Lights event and the dinos are decorated with holiday lights and accessories. (Sorry, my photos turned out horribly for those dark area dinos)

Address: 650 South R.L. Thornton Freeway (I-35E), Dallas, TX 75203
Hours: 5:30pm-9:00pm
Tickets: Prices vary by dates but general starts at $16; certain Dallas Zoo membership gives discounts

Review - Houston - Houston Zoo - Zoo Boo Event

This past Sunday I was able to visit the Houston Zoo and enjoy their annual Zoo Boo decorations. Zoo Boo is included with daily admission. Just a word of caution in case your kiddos are expecting some kind of candy, there are no trick-or-treats at this event.

What is Zoo Boo?
It's basically the zoo with lots of fun Halloween-themed or Fall-themed decorations. Lots of photo-ops.

The list of Zoo Boo attractions are shown on the bottom of the Visitor Guide Map (available just inside the Zoo at the digital map display).

New for 2024, you will find two giant Talking (and singing) Pumpkins. One is at the end of the Spooky Forest (which luckily for youngsters isn't too spooky during the day) and the other is in the African Forest. Also new this year are Glowing Pumpkins near the Flamingo Terrace as well as a "Ghost Town" just past the giraffe barn with great photo-ops and skeleton props. I'm sure at night, these are a lot scarier.

Zoo Boo is every day until October 31st. The price is included with regular admission (or free if you are a Houston Zoo Member). Zoo Boo After Hours is a separately ticketed event and occurs Friday nights and nightly October 23rd-30th from 5pm to 9:30pm.

Highlights of the Zoo Boo After Hours event is that the lights on many decorations will be turned on, including the Spooky Forest, the Glowing Pumpkins (near the Flamingo Terrace), and the Ghost Town. Some young children might be afraid of the glowing eyes and props. There will also be a Dance Party in the Children's Zoo area. And s'more making by the fire pit (or pay for a premium s'more).

Ghost town is series of prop buildings with cute skeleton photo-ops set up between each one. Across the way was another, bigger photo-op area.

Throughout the zoo were some really neat carved "pumpkins". Kiddos have fun searching for these and seeing which animals are carved in there.

Family-friendly costumes for both adults and children are encouraged. I personally saw very few people in costumes but I did see a lot of cool family-matching shirts and outfits. Perhaps when it gets closer to Halloween there will be more costumes?

Parking is FREE within the Hermann Park. Try to arrive early because parking filled up quickly as the park is home to lots of things to do and events. Also, it got a bit confusing driving through with some of the roads being closed by police due to pedestrian traffic.

Also, just FYI, ticket prices fluctuate by day/time. If you have some flexibility, you might want to visit on a weekday when the prices are lower.
